Durham, Beamish & Herriot Country

 

 

An opportunity to stay at a lovely hotel in the centre of the beautiful cathedral city of Durham, while making the most of this attractive part of the country. Travel north east on one day to enjoy fascinating turn of the century history recreated at Beamish, then shop till you drop at the huge Metro Centre. Westwards on another day takes you into the scenic Durham and Yorkshire Dales with their characteristic dry stone walls and moorland villages. Finally visit the former surgery of England’s most famous vet, James Herriot.

Suggested Itinerary

DAY ONE
Travel to your hotel in Durham. If time allows we recommend a stop in the lovely city of York.

DAY TWO
Morning visit to Beamish, the fascinating open-air museum taking visitors on a nostalgic journey back to the turn of the century and before. Continue afterwards to the Metro Centre, a huge shoppers’ paradise.

DAY THREE
Free day in Durham. The hotel is within walking distance of the major sites, but please remember that the famous Cathedral and University are on top of the hill. There are many lovely little shops and lanes to explore.

DAY FOUR
A tour of the Durham and Yorkshire Dales in the safe hands of a local guide. An interesting day out that combines glorious scenery with rich history and some quirky little places to see.

DAY FIVE
Homeward journey. Travel south to the olde worlde town of Thirsk; “Darrowby” in the books by James Herriot. Visit his former surgery which is now a museum. Continue homewards afterwards.
